How can I get my money back from an online scam or, at least stop them from taking money out of my account?

In january I signed up to process rebates online. This opportunity was offered by a woman named Angel Stevens. I was looking for opportunities to work from home by choice, I was not sent an email offer. I figured I should take a chance, with the "you only live once" mindset, and gave this this person my debit card info. I did not give out my social security number, I would definitely have to downright stupid to do such a thing. A couple of weeks later, $197 was taken out of my account, which I was fully aware I would be paying for. The same night I found the website, I thought I would begin my training. Instead, I got something totally different. They wanted me to start my own website and gave me very foggy instructions to do so. I was also offered a special service that was supposed to help me get my career up and running. It was of no use to me. It also required a monthly membership fee of $39.95. I have contacted Angel Stevens and customer service, both by email and phone. I was told that I would get a refund for both $197 and the $39.95, as well as have my membership cancelled and recieve a confirmation email. That was almost a month ago and I have not gotten any results. I feel so ashamed for not looking into this furthur. The website gave Angel's home and business emails along with customer service email and a phone number, I figured it was legitimate. I'm hoping I can at least stop the $39.95 a month from coming out of my checking account. Is there anyone I can contact? I have LifeLock,will that help? Will I have to contact my bank and close my account and open a new account?


It is possible for you to contact your bank to avoid any future bank account debits associated with this organization. Just to be sure, you may inquire with your bank about closing out this account to open up a new one. I would probably go that route if I were you.

As for the organization that scammed you, I would try calling everyday to complain about the situation in hopes that "the squeaky wheel will get oiled". You may also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, which is free and available completely online.

The Better Business Bureau is also known to help consumers with mediation in situations such as this one. Assuming that the organization is legitimate, it is very possible to get its attention when the BBB contacts it on your behalf. Of course, if the organization is full of a bunch of "scam dogs," this will be quite a bit less effective. In any case, it doesn't hurt to try.

My bank decided to hold a check deposit after telling me it was available.?

We deposited a check into our bank account on Friday. It was for the amount of $4,000. I logged into the online banking today and checked our account and it said our available balance was -$345.00 and our ledger balance was $3,755. I talked to the bank representative and she said we were okay there was no problems. She opened up another window and saw there was a hold on it. According to her, the manager released the hold on the check and our receipt said at the time of deposit available balance $4,100. She even told us there was not a hold on the check and we were okay. The woman I spoke with said a second panel reviews the deposits at night and decided to put a hold on it. She said they don't let inform them when they do this, so I will have to be responsible for the overdraft charges they will apply because they decided to place a hold on it and not inform me. That's not right at all. Most of my purchases were small amounts. Not I'm looking at over $500 in overdraft fees.
Believe it or not it wasn't Bank of America. I used to bank with them, but I had so many problems with them we left. It was Washington Mutual. I did get the situation taken care of and I should be charged any fees. I just have to be more careful next time I guess. It's ridiculous!


That is totally wrong! Go talk to the bank manager in person and explain exactly what you said here and ask for the overdraft fees to be refunded. They should have informed you when they decided to hold the check and since they didn't, you incurred the fees. It is their responsibility. Threaten to close your account if they don't refund the fees. Good luck!

i think my friend has been scammed out of money. any help appreciated x?

my male friend is incredibly shy with women and he decided to book a private escorting girl to meet him at a hotel for a night of fun. he found her on the website adultwork.com and she seemed very genuine with feedback from other men she had seen etc.
Anyway she asked him to pay a deposit of £400 to her private bank account (bank of scotland i think) and he was to pay the rest of the money in cash when she arrived at the hotel. He transferred the £400 to her with his online banking as he thought that this was standard practice with escorts and the fact that she had so much feedback from other customers he thought she was 100% genuine.
She didnt show up and has made no more contact with him but has kept his £400.
is there anything he can do to get it back or to get her in to trouble? surely if he went to the police they would not take it seriously as there is no proof that the meeting didnt actually take place.

He is very foolish. It's a little late to get the money back now.

If he's shy with women, he just needs to hang around them more. My advice is to get talking to girls online, girls you know and girls you don't, its an easy way off initially building confidence. You need to form good friendships first.

I had the feeling that something is wrong." He examined the ledgers and found that "there was from 1864 to 1970 a complete bank record documenting banking business."

The job had one benefit: The bank gave him time off--important because he often speaks before Jewish audiences. He has visited Auschwitz with Holocaust survivors, prayed with Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem at the Wailing Wall and given speeches at temples and Jewish organizations from St. Paul to Pittsburgh to Miami to Beverly Hills. Meeting survivors at these events is, of course, an intense experience. Giuseppina explained:

"There are certain people, when they start to talk about what happened to them, they scream. They really scream. That's very hard for us. Then there are other people who don't stop talking. And there was one woman who told us of how she was in Auschwitz and ashes were coming out from the chimneys of the crematoria and they were choking. Another woman told us, 'And then they killed my father and the blood was all over the white snow, and this was the red carpet that God prepared for his children.' Sometimes this is too much for us; you need them to put this away, or to say a prayer instead."

Meili is also concerned about the future of the settlement he set in motion. He is an advocate for the survivors in what he sees as a conflict with Jewish organizations, especially the World Jewish Congress. The important thing, he says, "is to get the money to the survivors, not to the organizations." The World Jewish Congress is claiming part of the settlement on behalf of those who have died, which they plan to use to assist Jewish communities and rebuild synagogues in Eastern Europe and Russia. The key issue is timing--how quickly the settlement is paid. The survivors are mostly poor and very old. They need the money immediately, and every year more of them die. "They are not good at fighting for the money. Once they are gone, the Jewish organizations claim their share of the settlement. I like to support the survivors," Meili concludes.

All the jewish owned and run banks in Switzerland screwed the german and other refugee jews after the war so I guess they all were.

A bank charged an unfair fine to my account. What do I do?

I am thoroughly angry with the service of Charter One bank. The story goes as such:

A family friend sent me a check for $2000 dollars. I walked into my local Charter One branch on 5-13-08 and brought the check to a teller. I asked her, "Could you deposit $1000 into my account and just put the other $1000 directly into my father's account. Our accounts are not connected, but she said it would be no problem. After a few days I realized that there was a deposit amount for $1000 on my account statement, yet it was not added to my available balance. The same happened with my father. My available balance stayed at around $115 and I continued making small purchases with my debit card.

On Monday, I tried to use the card to buy groceries at a Kroger and the cashier told me the card was declined. I came home and checked out my account online. The statement now said that my available balance was around -$800. I quickly called the support line, where the woman told me that $2000 was currently in the process of leaving my account. She had no idea what the money was for or where it was going. The next day I checked again, and the statement said $2000 had been withdrawn from my account because the check had to be returned. I called the check writer later, and she confirmed that it was a bad check and promised to resend.

I thought, obviously the bank made a simple mistake in taking $2000 from my account, instead of $1000 from mine and $1000 from my father's. I came in to the branch, and the teller directed me to the manager, named Jenny. There, I found that not only had $2000 been taken out of my account, but that a $20 fine was charged for the bad check and a $222 fine was charged for using my debit card when I had overdrawn.

She proceeded to tell me that the check was written in my name, so all the money must be returned from my account. The other $1000 had still not become available in my father's account, so he had the same amount of money he started with, and I had $1000 less. She told me to just get the $1000 back from my father, but it was not available in his account to give back to me. It had been about a week since the check was deposited, by the way. I let her know, and she promptly made the $1000 available for him.

At this point, I told her, "OK, I'll just transfer it to get it back in the positives, could you just take off the $222 fine, since this is obviously not my fault?" She told me that it is the fault of the check writer, and to call her myself and ask her for the money. She did return $74 of the fine to me as courtesy, though.

I left after realizing she would not give in. Later that night, I decided I should in no way be charged for the purchases I had made before I even knew the check had been returned. The following day, today, I went in to what I believed was the headquarters for Charter One. After waiting for about an hour, a woman said no managers were in and this was not the headquarters, just another branch. I told her my situation anyway, and she called the same Jenny I had spoken to the day before. She handed the phone to me, and I demanded that the fines be returned since I did not know I was overdrawn when I was making the purchases. She threw some terminology at me about the bank holding the charges until the following business day, and I had to be careful. None of it made sense, but it had big words, so it must have been right. She would again not give in, so I told her thank you and left the branch. Here I am.
Even if everything about the deposit and subsequent withdrawal is all good and legal, I would like to fight the fine. I was charged $37 for each item I purchased before the -$2000 appeared on my account. If I had bought 100 $1 items, does that mean they can charge me $3700?


Here is a MIGHTY lesson learned.
Never write checks or spend money on a check that came from a personal account. ALWAYS wait until the check has processed before you make withdraws against it. If you do and the check does NOT clear, then if you had checks that did not get covered by the amount in your accounts, then you will be charged the overages. This is a simple matter.
The reason they do this is because of fraudulent check writing. The manner in which you deposited the check would also be suspicious. 2K split deposit into an account that was not yours? Another BAD choice. If this ever happens again, Deposit all the money into your account, but it does NOT exist until the check clears. If it bounces then and you get charged the $20 from the bank, then you can pass that back onto the check writer as well as collect your fee for having to deal with it. Generally you would charge them $35. Next time they want to write you a check, tell them it MUST be as a Registered check or Money Order. (I prefer Registered Checks from an accredited bank.)

AS far as them withdrawing 2K from your account and not 1K from both, or them not properly depositing the money, then you shold speak with a customer service rep who can research it for you! It will take some time to resolve it, but they can and will fix it.
