I realize that many of you bank in neither or use a credit union, but if you had to choose one of those banks for a checking account which one would you choose? Take all factors into consideration.
I currently have Bank of America, and it's not horrible, but I just feel like they don't really care about their customers all that much and sometimes they take a long time to clear checks... I feel like BoA is the McDonald's of banking in America if you will... They're the biggest bank, they're everywhere, etc., I often hear bad things and stories about them and when I tell my friends where I bank they usually go "oh..." and none of them bank at BoA either... I've had a few less than pleasant experiences with BoA myself, nothing too bad, but I think I could be getting a better service somewhere else.
So I'm thinking about switching to Wells Fargo - it seems to me they're more professional and well-respected while offering the same online amenities as BoA and all of the same plus more features.
What's your recommendation?
I would go with a small bank or local credit union. You get better customer service from the smaller banks.

I don't usually check my savings acct. but now while browsing online I happen to notice that they've been deducting a monthly service charge of $3.00. I never heard of any bank that charges on savings , not to mention that I have a decent amount of money from them. I need to hear your opinion on this since today is Sunday and their customer service is closed. I'll talk to them tomorrow. Thanks.

I had a problem with Paypal, Bought and item on ebay and they charged my bank account instead of my credit crad (which I entered at the time of checkout). I've seen online that they do this repeatedly to other costumers because they get very high fees when they chanrge credit cards.
Well.... the problem was that I had just transfered a bunch of money and my checking acct at wells fargo was almost empty. The charge from paypal overdrafted my account and I noticed 1 day later. By then I had $140 dlls in overdraft fees and a huge negative balance.
I called Wells Fargo Immediatly and disputed the charge from paypal and they told me it was going to take about 10 day. to resolve.
My question is... do you think they'll reverse those fees? It was an unauthorized transaction. I even called paypal and they refused to help. They literally said "you have to call your bank, I can't reverse it from here." As I was just asking to reverse that charge and charge my credit card on file (LIKE THEY WERE SUPOPSED TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE).
I've been a customer of Wells Fargo for 6 years now, and I have my student loans with them. Altought I feel confortable with the service I don't like their policy o crazy fees (which is very very rare on me).
do you think that if I threaten to leave and refinance my loans with somebody else they'll reverse all the fees? I mean, it wasn't my fault in the first place, but neither Paypal nor Wells Fargo have been very helpfull right now.
Patpal had my checking account number because I sell cars on ebay and they deposit to that account.
They will usually refund the charges once the dispute is resolved. Bring them proof that you submitted your credit card for payment - do you have a receipt showing the card number you wanted charged? I used to work for them, and we would give a provisional credit to your account pending the outcome. Of course that was years ago, and probably not an option in today's world. Your best bet is to go into your local office and talk to them in person. That will get you better and more personal results than a phone call.
You may be able to negotiate at least a partial refund of those charges.
As far as threatening to leave, well, I can tell you that from my experience, they'll just pat you on the head and wish you a good life.
On Monday, March 23 I had an appointment to see my tax accountant in Eagan, MN. I got there and discovered I'd left my mortgage statement at home on the other side of the Twin Cities so, after kicking myself for being unprepared, I stopped in to the Apple Valley branch of Wells Fargo and asked if they could print a copy.
The branch refused, telling me I'd have to use their online system. Online mortgage statements weren't available several years ago when I took out my mortgage, so I had never signed up for the service. After 15 minutes of sitting through the various automated menus over the telephone at a banker's desk, I had to give up and leave in order to get to my appointment. I promised to fax the accountant my statement later.
While I know it's not the bank's fault that I forgot my statement, is it legal for them to refuse to print a mortgage statement and, instead, insist that customers go online? I would think there are some pretty strict regulations about what information they have to provide and the route customers must take to get it.
Clarification: My question is not about lack of instant service, but with the fact that the bank told me my only option was to go online.
Had I chosen to stay and miss my appointment, the banker would have allowed me to complete the online enrollment there at her desk - and the person was friendly throughout the experience, even as I became more impatient.
So the issue is really around their policy requiring self-service *on line*.
I include the circumstances for context (full disclosure: and out of aggravation with Wells Fargo policy and practice), rather than to criticize their employees.
Thanks for taking the time to consider my question.
The Branch does not have access to the mortgage statements. Wells Fargo Mortgage and Wells Fargo Bank are two different sections of the company. If you had spoken with a mortgage rep (some branches have them in the store) maybe they could have gotten you a statement, but a regular banker would not be able to get that information.
Same goes for Student Loans and Wells Fargo Auto Finance and Wells Fargo Financial. All part of the same big company, but different sections.
After poor customer service by phone (toll free) do you know how I can obtain the name of a real uppper management person I could talk to in my specific city and state (Las Vegas)? I always pay a few months ahead on my house payment, so I don't owe one until December 1, 2009. However, when I sent in my November 1 payment, Wells misapplied the money and fixed it, so I asked for a new mortgage statement. Instead, they sent me a form letter from the collection agency reading I need to pay "o" amount for my December 1 house payment, and I need to pay that amount by October 12, 2009 to keep my good credit. In other words, the stupid customer service person sent me a collection letter instead of a "corrected" monthly statement of what I owe for December 1 (my next payment). Again, this collection letter says I owe zero dollars but if I don't pay that amount by October 12 it will hurt my credit. Online it shows my next payment is due December 1, but this collection letter has a special issue number attached to it and I want it expunged. I am completely disgusted and want to speak to a manager, especially given the fact I am ahead on my house payments!!! I always have been! I'd just throw this in the trash, but I don't want this stupid mistake to tarnish my outstanding record. So, can I walk into any bank and have a local manager resolve it-because I am so "done with" Wells toll free customer service. Any suggestions?
Yes, just go to a local branch and ask to speak to the manager. They should be able to resolve the issue.
I certainly understand your frustration.
Banking by Text Message - Bucks Blog - NYTimes.com
Wells Fargo claimed in its news release to be the first major financial services company in the United States to offer the service, and, according to American Banker , it is one of the first major banks to do so.
Wells Fargo said its research showed that customers want to be able to check their account balances while on the go. With the text messaging service (available at wf.com/text ), customers can send messages to 93557 (think “WELLS”) asking to check their account balances (text “BAL ALL”), see if a check is deposited (text “ACT”), see credit card payment information (text “DUE”) and find the address of the nearest Wells Fargo automatic teller machine (text “ATM” along with the city and state or ZIP code). Such activities are among the most popular mobile banking features.
