Can banks offering Internet Banking expect their customers to have better Internet security protection than the banks' own protection? Details and sources please?
Can banks offering Internet Banking expect their customers to have better Internet security protection than the banks' own protection?

In this scenario the customer's username n password were stolen via a keylogger following which the perpetrator steals the customer's money. (How does this make a difference?) Can the bank insist that the customer's security be better than its own? (I'm on the customer's side)

Details and sources please?

No, in fact they assume you have no protection at all. The connection between banks and your PC is always secure, it comes with your operating system and browser - and if you somehow managed to damage your software so much it can't perform a secure handshake - you'll get an error message, simple as that.

However the real danger comes from software already installed on your machine (such as spyware and keyloggers) which steal the information before it's even encrypted and transmitted. Banks are finally coming round to this notion, and some (notably Barclays) offer extra pin protection to ensure the card is present when accessing accounts from home.

Trusteer Online Banking Protection

Is Rapport from Trusteer a good program for internet protection and security?
Internet security

I have been offered a free down load off it, from my internet banking.

yes go with it, i have and it is just extra protection to have , it can be used in conjunction with whatever security program you have running such as McAfee, to protect a website all you have to so is click on the icon in the address bar and that website will be protection against spyware and key logging. it great to use for any websites in which you have to log in such and but you card details or bank details, like amazon or natwest.

what does 'BBA OVERDRAFT NO PROTECTION' mean? it appears on my internet banking page.?
Dollars and a enter key

To me, it sounds like you have an overdraft on your business bank account, and you do not have overdraft insurance. Meaning you have no money to cover a check you wrote or a debit you incurred, and you don't have insurance to cover the overdraft so it is outstanding and you will incur fees. Check with your bank if they are open now, or as soon as possible on the next business day. If you can, deposit money in the account to cover any further charges against the account.

My anti-virus expired, I tried install update, its not accepted, cant access internet banking or secure sites..
What You Need to Know (free lecture)

I had Norton Anti-Virus software installed late in 2004 and this expired end of last year. I was on holiday and forgot all about it, 2 months went past and then was told it was expired when I logged on. I am with BT broadband and they have anti-virus software but it wont do it all, so II bought a new 2006 version (Symantec Anti Norton Virus) some months ago and tried to install it but it wont accept. I get a pop-up saying "Virus protection out of date" etc......... but it wont go away, I cant install new one and the old one wont go away! Cant delete the old one either. What's going on? Please help, I cant get to ANY secure pages or website such as internet banking or if I want to buy anything on the internet, the page is UNAVAILABLE......

You probably need to uninstall the old version first.
Go into Start, Control Panel, find current programme listed, and delete.
You should then be able to install new version.

HSBC (UK) Internet Banking Scare ..... !?
mpj043315300001

I have been with HSBC for many years and used their internet banking almost from launch, without problem I may add. But today I logged on to HSBC internet banking and was asked for my usual date of birth, then a random selection from my six digit security number and then a further box asking for my FULL security number, stating that this was 'advanced user protection' . I refused to do this and rang the HSBC Internet Banking help line where I received half hearted advice in the first instance. I then logged onto the same site on my partner's PC and found the same HSBC page but without the box requesting the full security number. I rang HSBC yet again and I was given advice that the page I was accessing was a 'spoof' and she arranged for my security number to be changed there and then ( automated system ) and put me through to their tech department where they advised I downloaded Spybot. I did this and over a long scan it picked up many trojans and PUP's ( even though I have the McAfee full package loaded ). After this, I revisited HSBC site and the spoof page had gone. Quite frightening that I could have given someone access to my full banking system! Has anyone else had a similar internet banking experience of aware of someone that has?

It was just a Browser Hijack from the Malware on your machine. TBH, Spybot is not good for detecting things, so you should run scans with Avira AntiVir Free and Superantispyware.
