I'm going to college next year, and I need some financial help, so I've been thinking of OSAP or a student line of credit. I know all the details about OSAP, their "forgiveness", not paying until after you graduate, etc. But the TD Canada Trust Student Line of credit is just as good. Here's the details for the line of credit:
* Pay no monthly or annual fees.
* Get a competitive interest rate, equal to TD Prime plus a variance rate. Good news: the variance rate doesn’t increase after you graduate!
* Withdraw any amount (up to your approved credit limit).
* Pay interest-only monthly payments for up to 12 months after your finish school.
* Enjoy low monthly payments after the interest-only grace period, with up to 20 years to repay.
* Access your money through Green Machine ABMs, Interac Direct Payment, EasyWeb Internet banking, EasyLine telephone banking, cheques and at any TD Canada Trust branch.
I don't want to get both OSAP and the line of credit, I just want one. With a line of credit, I'm guaranteed to get the money I need .. so should I use OSAP or TD's Student Line of Credit?
Find out what the variance is. For federal student loans it's prime + 2.5% and prime + 1% for Ontario loans. You can get it fixed or floating. The line of credit is usually for people who get rejected for OSAP because their parents are too rich. I've been paying back my OSAP for a year and their very reasonable. My payments have gone down to about $100/month from $150 because I made a large lump sum payment of $500 and the interest rates are low. Personally, I'd recommend OSAP because they're much more forgiving

alright so almost a year ago i got this ransom cheque in the mail for $3000... it was a draft from a major bank in canada called CIBC. at the time i was in a really pinch for money (hadnt eaten for about 2 or 3 days) so i figured that i would see if the bank (TD Canada Trust) would cash it... when i went they scanned it to see if the threds lit up under the light and so on, the check passed all those tests and then the tellers cashed it the same day... so about a month later i find out that my entire bank account is frozen, whatever money i had saved up was gone and i had no way of accessing my bank account. i went to the bank and they said that the cheque was a fake and that i had to pay every cent back... i talked to a few tellers at different branches and they even said that the cheque should have been put on hold untill it went though... me being only 20 i didnt know any of this stuff i am very new to banking... so trying to figure out a solution i asked about maybe getting a loan to cover the expences and pay monthly or increasing my visa limit... they told me that the only way the bank could help was to give me an overdraft and when i asked for details about it they just said i could pay back little by little just like a loan... about 2 weeks later i started getting phone calls multipule times a day demanding me to give them the money ALL OF IT... because of this i had to quit college because of the expances of this overdraft. anotherthing that they "forgot" to inform me of was that overdrafts have a hudge interest fee so even when i was able to put on $100 or more a month by the time the monthy charges came up i was back to where i was or even more in debt... now shouldnt banks have insurance for things like this??? can anyone help me try and get this solved? i wanna be able to start school again but i cant untill i figure this out
I think you mean you received a "random" check. A ransom check is paid to a kidnapper.
The bank is not required to place a hold on any check, and they had no obligation to help you prevent this fraud. In fact, you are technically guilty of a crime if you knew or had any reason to believe that the check could be a fake.
Banks do carry insurance for fraud, but it does not cover the depositor unless the depositor is a victim of fraud. You would be a victim of fraud if someone forged one of your checks or compromised your account in some other way.
Since you are technically one of the perpetrators of this fraud, the insurance is not going to help you. Unfortunately, you have to find a way to pay the bank the full amount of the counterfeit check you cashed.
I am looking at a horse trailer from Texas (I live in Alberta) and the seller wants to use an agent at the TD Canada Trust bank in Sherbrooke, Montreal. Yahoo! Autos sent me an invoice asking that a bank to bank wire transfer be sent. The seller indicated Yahoo does not usually use an agent but because I am from Canada they had to. The TD Branch exists just not sure if this is something usually done - I'm very nervous about transactions over the internet. How can I be sure this isn't a fraud?
This is a well-documented scam. Yahoo! Autos never gets involved on any third-party transactions. Anytime a wire transfer is involved, a red flag needs to be raised. Did the "seller" also offer to ship the trailer for free? Did they give you some sob story as to why it's being sold (military, divorcing, dead relative, moving overseas, etc.)?
Tomorrow, call the TD Branch and ask them... they will tell you the same thing. Also, tell the "seller" that you have a friend down in Texas that wants to come inspect the trailer beforehand. The "seller" will do one of two things:
1) Throw out every excuse not to let your "buddy" do so, or...
2) Stop communicating with you.
Don't fall for this. It's a variation of a long-running scam on Craigslist, Autotrader, etc.
I have a debit card so i can't really pay through the internet but can i put money on my paypal though my bank account? (TD Canada Trust)
Yes just go to your bank to get started
O.k, i was looking for the safest and most conveinent way to synchronize all my transactions on the net...i was looking for a secure payment system that incorporated internet currencies with conventional banking and with debitcard facilities... a system that was available worldwide and was easy to use yet foolproof....i think i found such a system at directebank.com, but how come no one else was talking about it ? i searched several disscussion boards but no one was talking about it. Please has any one patronize their services?...are they 100% functional? can i get more information preferable from BBB or some other regulatory body on their status? Directebank is supposed to be a canadian firm (with some form of patnership with TD canada trust and the Bank of America) that facillites internet transactions using the lastest encyption technology...i will appreciate all the info i can get on them please...thank you good 'Yahooians'
Why not stick with a well known entity like ETrade Bank, or Paypal? (paypal has a sweet deal...high interest rates on a no fee account and they kick back a percent and a half everytime you use your debit/mastercard as a charge card).
