Credit Card Debt

Bank Of Guam Online

Why does my husband lie about what he buys? Is he cheating?

My husband is stationed overseas in the military and I don't understand what he's spending his money on and why he tries to hide it. We have a shared bank account and we only use our debit cards. We also use online banking. He'll tell me that he's going to go to the grocery store to buy food, which I don't care, he doesn't have to ask me to spend money, but he usually will tell me when he's going to. I'll be looking through everything online and I notice that when he goes to the grocery store he'll buy something for like a dollar and then get like 100 dollars cash back. I don't yell at him when he spends money so I don't understand why he needs to use cash. He's in Guam so the currency is the same, so his debit card can be used anywhere just like in the states. So, I'll ask him what kind of food he bought just to see what he would say and he'll ramble off some stuff. I know he's lying. I just don't understand what he's doing with the money. Do you think he's doing something bad with it that he doesn't want me to see like going to bars or strip clubs? This has been going on for a long time and I've asked him not to take cash out unless he really needs just cash for work or something and he agreed, but he keeps doing it. Even though he agreed he keeps lying and taking out cash. I have a hard time trusting him because he always lies about little things. It makes me think that if he's going to lie about something little, then he's bound to lie about more. It just sucks to be a faithful and honest person and constantly be lied to. Please give me your opinion. Thank you.

How much cash per month are we talking about?

I believe he withdraws cash so you can't follow his activities. If the amounts are considerable then it's because he's paying for himself and someone else. Don't think your husband would go for a $200 meal on his own.

...as per my experience, yes, if they lie about little things they have no scruples lying about the big things.

It's kind of hard to answer without ALL the facts and without his side of the story.

If you are the one in charge of the family finances, then do this because it will be better in the long run.

Make him responsible for what he does, and you do the same. Men are going to always want some money in their pocket. He doesn't need 100 dollars every weekend, does he? Put him on an allowance. Tell him that you are trying to save money for later on, or for a car or to re-decorate or something. If he does not stop spending his money soon, he won't learn when he has any more responsibility or when you two start having kids. $75 a week is plenty, if he gets to eat in the mess hall and has barracks to sleep in. Make him account for his money or purchases. In the long run, he may thank you, even if he doesn't now.

Most couples break up and divorce over a variety of issues....Don't let money be one of them when there are other issues that are far worse to break up over.
