I'm trying to decide whether to take an open variable mortgage versus a credit line. Is there any difference? I live in Ontario, Canada
In Canada mortgage interest is not tax deductable, unless you're doing the smith maneuver.
Will a bank give you a line of credit to cover your mortgage or are you referring to a product like manulife one? The rates on the line of credit tend to be higher than on the variable rate mortgage.

Hi, I have a question hope you can help.
I use Quick Tax to prepare my 2006 return, I noticed when come to printing the returns I have ON479 included in the package to submit.
However, on page 4 of my T1 general, the line number 479 is Blank or Null. I did fill in the ON479 to claim the Ontario Credit. But the th result after the calculation on the ON479 is also blank/null. I understand that mean I am not getting any credit. But do I need to send the ON479 in with the returns.
Would any one have any idea?
Thanks to the replies from Lala and Charles.
In the past, Quick Tax did not print out ON479 for me. So I just submitted the returns without ON479. But it printed the form this year make me wonder if there is a change to the Tax requirement that we must submit the form no matter what.
Any suggestion?
Potentially the form might be required even if its blank.
I rented a room in university campus from Sep. 2008 to April 16,2009. Can I claim "Rent paid in Ontario in 2008" on Line 6110 (note:it will multiply the amount by 20%.) on the "Ontario Credits and Senior Homeowners' Property Tax Grant" Form? BTW,I also claim "student residence for $25 .During Summer holiday,I live with my parents. Thanks.
If you are living on campus, the only rent credit you will get is that student residence credit for $25. Even if you DID live off campus, unless it was your principal residence, you would not be able to claim rent. You are only staying there while you are in school. Your principal residence is with your parents so you can't claim it.

Given our growth plans for 2010, we felt that now was the best time to take advantage of this opportunity.”
