I have 17 years of experience in the investment field and I have been managing and trading my own account for a living since '98.
I am thinking about talking with some independent financial advisors with the intent of finding someone that wants to take on a junior advisor(usually the advisor will give the junior some small accounts to help get started and takes a cut of the commissions of course) I have heard that this is a much better approach than starting out with no accounts as you would in a wire house training program.
We've been trading for the same amt of time!!! Me since 98 too! I decided to get my series 7, & 3 license at the end of 2000, but then when 9/11 happened it just created havoc in securities industry. And even though I believed the market would go down and had good stragities to help people protect their investments, I couldn't convince others. I guess I am not a very good salesperson. I hated the sales end of the industry, as it is just that. Sales. Makes no difference to the company what you know, they just want to see sales. The better way I think for a trader, if that is what you like to do, is to get in on the portfolio management or (I can't think of the term right now, but industrial? where you are working with trading currencies for banks or trading stocks for the company itself) side of the industry, but stay away from the retail end. I later got my series 55 (market maker) and was much happier on that side of things, and later was hired by a private party to manage their large portfolio. I was very happy with that and made very good money, (but there were personal conflicts) I took my bonus and ran and now am back on my own.....and have lost all my licences due to not hanging them with a company, which I am not unhappy about. It was a good experience. I now also work with others helping them manage their own portfolio, for which I don't need any securities license for. I take a % of profits, and feel much happier doing this. I hope this helps.....and good luck!
I've been thinking of a career change for a while (I am currently a web designer) and have been looking at becoming an IFA. I have seen hundreds of training courses being offered as well as trainee positions and they all seem to make it sound a little too good to be true. Is there really a high demand for this at the moment and how long could it take me to be up and running in this profession?
Try checking the trend in several jobsites. Changing a career is not easy by just taking training course, you should have strong educational background/bachelors degree to be qualified. Plus at least 2 yrs extensive experience.
I've recently got my CeMAP 1,2 and 3 and am just about to join a training course with New Leaf (to become an appointed representative) to do
my CeFAs and eventually Dip FA. They will also train and authorise me to give mortgage and insurance advice as an ifs on a commission basis.
Someone recommended getting a position with a large bank or investment company for a few years first because I don't have any experience.
Would they take on a person with no experience?
If not, do you think it would be worth getting trained up and working with New Leaf for a few years before applying for someone like this?
Stick with them for the time being. IFA firms like people with experience and a track record in sales.
I just posted my resume on monster.com yesterday. This morning, I got an email about a job opening for a financial service agency manager position from Farmers. Is this a scam or should I reply her? The job and the paid is very attractive, but I have never worked as a manager before. I am a recently college graduate. I had worked in as an administrative assistant for 5+ years. Should I reply or just wait for other job offering?

Hi, Just checked their website out http://farmersteam77.com/ Looks like a sales agent job to sell insurance policies. Is that what you were looking for? The salary will be exaggerated because it will commission based. No harm in contacting them to find out more. But tread very carefully. Don't give them any money.
