Finding A Financial Advisor

I'm at that point in life where I think I need to go over my retirement stuff with someone with far more finance acumen then I have but haven't a clue how to find a financial advisor since I'm not wealthy and just want to make sure what I'm doing is optimal for me. My friends all seem to be using some relative of theirs and my relatives refuse to discuss anything having to do with money.

I would ask your friends who they use and see if they can put you in touch with their financial adviser. The bottom line is you need to find someone whom you can trust and the first place you should look is to see who your friends trust. There are some financial advisers out there that only lookout for themselves. But, there are some really good financial advisers out there, you just need to look for them. Make sure your adviser represents financially strong companies.

Better gives you tips to finding a financial advisor you can trust.

I'm not a huge investor, but have realized that I just don't have the time to effectively handle my own financial planning. As such, how do I go about finding a good financial advisor/planner in Los Angeles?

Or, are there some resources on the web that will allow my to efficiently do my own planning?

I suggest you go to Dave Ramsey's website and click on ELP (endorsed local provider) for investments. You put in your area and an ELP in the investment area will contact you or you contact them.

The ELPs listed with Dave Ramsey are very professional and help teach their clients about the process instead of just putting you in stocks or mutual funds you don't understand.

Where can I find a financial advisor in the Philippines? Is there a financial company that has advisors or stockbrokers that could do all this work for me. I want to invest in GOLD and SILVER there but I don't want to deal with any scams.

Have you checked with your local bank manager lately? You would be surprised at what some of these bank managers for bigger bank mangers like Philippines National Bank (PNB), Metrobank, Citibank, HSBC, Bank of the Philippines (BPI) and like banks know. Get to know your bank manager. Many of these good people surround themselves with circle of friends who have financial contacts that have become very successful.

Not for large wealth or anything, but for just getting started with investments. I've heard banks have them, but where else?

(1) You can try one of the big financial firms: Ameriprise, Merrill Lynch, or Charles Schwab.
(2) You can ask friends for referrals.

When you interview potential advisors, be sure you know how they get paid. There are pros and cons to each approach. Some models include:
- Percentage of assets under management
- Percentage of returns
- Monthly fee
- Hourly consultation fee
- Commission fees from products they recommend.
