I went to an evening seminar given by a financial advisor that specializes in financial advice for retirement. I am not in the business field, so how do I know this fellow is on the level? I don't want to give out important financial information to someone I don't know anything about. His name is Trae Wieniewitz, formerly of Louisiana. He now has a business in Knoxville, TN area called Wieniwitz Financial.
Mr. Wieniewitz is CLU and CLA. The brokerage check site was very helpful also. Thanks.
I would ask some friends or co-workers if they work with a Financial Planner at all. They might be a valuable source in finding a reliable advisor. Also, find out if Mr. Wieniewitz carries any professional designations... like CFP (Certified Financial Planner), ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant), ChFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), etc. I am studying for the CFP and I know their website will verify if someone in your area is a CFP or not. Their website may also be a good source of finding a reliable, credible, and accredited financial advisor.
CFP Board of Standards website: www.cfp.net
I look at it this way... I would not go to a Financial Planner without a designation, because I wouldn't have my taxes done by some one who isn't a CPA.
I hope this info helps. Good luck finding a good Financial Advisor.

My husband and I get invited to seminars from Financial Advisor's all the time. Because we are close to retirement age?? Some of these seminars are at some very nice resturants. Do people actually learn anything from these seminars or do most people just go for a free meal.?
My parents do it all the time for the free meal.
They do feel sorry for all the people that fall like flies for these.
They sell products that make them HUGE amounts of money.
They might even talk you into a reverse mortgage - huge money maker for them - huge.
My parents do it all the time - don't get taken.
It's like going to a time share presentation - enjoy it - but be careful.
My parents are very wise people, so all they learn from these things, is how people get taken.
The best financial advisor you can have is yourself.
If you are close to retirement, just open up a discount brokerage account and buy some 4% cd's and live off the interest - and be happy and sleep at night.
Be careful as you get older - only trust your children.

I've gone to 3 seminar/meetngs about 3 different companies that make you think you'll be making lots of money, going on trips, and what not. But I notice few things in common. They want $100 to get started. They want you to bring all your friends family and what not. And some of the people there aren't even close to making what the speaker just said people will be making. But then again I've camed a crossed few people that had made a fortune in it. Why is that? What's the key to succeeding in the Financial industry?
those sound like scams to me.....or very shady at the very least. why would YOU pay someone to work for them?
and the reason they want you to bring all your friends and family is so they can try to sell them the same idea too (ie; get their $100 also). sure that guy might make a lot of money, but he's doing it by scamming people out of their $100.
if you want to be a financial advisor, go to a reputable firm like merrill lynch, prudential, .... or even your neighborhood citibank of chase and apply to them.
good luck!

It is by Leo Quinn, some financial advisor/educator in NY. Is it for real or just a scam to get $67? I saw he teaches at Adirondack CC doing financial seminars.
Save your money. Here's information from Leo free.

It about the same as the $67 version. From what I can research real quick he's not a scam artist, but make sure you have a money back if not satisfied.
