I have lately been getting offers, by unsolicited e-mail, to be interviewed for financial advisor positions for places like Farmers Insurance and Waddell and Reed. I have zero experience in finance and don't have a degree in anything close to business or finance. What's the deal? Do they want me to work for commission (in other words, for nothing) or do they want to rip me off in some other way?
Or do they actually want to interview me for a legitimate job?
Gee, let me see.
1. It's unsolicited email (meaning, you didn't ask for it)
2. You have zero experience in business and finance.
3. You have no degrees related to business and finance.
So what was your question????
Jeez, dude, why did you even open the email?

there are legitimate reasons for bankruptcy that have nothing to do with planning or poor credit/investment decisions.
someone with the experience may even be a better advisor since they have the experience of the worse case scenario.

People just get financial answers at yahoo finance, so is the job of financial advisor still going to be a good one or should i look for something slightly different? I am starting with a degree in finance to become a personal financial advisor.
I have to ask you: Would you really invest money based on answers you got from people who do not know you or your situation, and from people who you do not know?
The role of a financial advisor is: "Advise clients on financial plans utilizing knowledge of tax and investment strategies, securities, insurance, pension plans, and real estate. Duties include assessing clients' assets, liabilities, cash flow, insurance coverage, tax status, and financial objectives to establish investment strategies. "
People use this forum for very small issues. Being a financial advisor is personally and financially rewarding. And sometimes your biggest challenge is to explain to a client why what they got from the Internet doesn't appropriately apply to them.
