I am trying to find out who I contact about this. I am not in debt so it wouldn't be credit counselling. All I want is someone to sit down take all our income and all our debt then put us on a budget so that we aren't strapped. I want to know how much we are alotted each week without going over our budget and still making ends meet. What profession am I looking for? I tried Financial planner but that is mostly investments. I have tried debt management but I am not really "in" debt.I just need a plan!!
What you are looking for is a financial counselor.
As you have discovered, financial planners do investing, and credit counselors do debt management.
A good financial counselor helps people create realistic budgets that they can live with and adjust when needed. He/She works with clients to help them see how they can live on slightly less than they make so they can save enough to cover emergencies and to accomplish large financial goals over time.
I am not a financial planner, so I don't do investing. I am not a credit counselor, so I don't help people improve their "I love debt" credit score.
I am a financial counselor. Since we are not supposed to advertise in our answers, you can email me for more information.
Before leaving Canada, I owed for a Student Loan. In Canada, the student loan separates into federal and provincial if it goes to collections which mine has done.
I am paying $100 to the federal part of the loan. I have explained that since I am going to school here in the states that my partner who is actually paying this for me can't afford more then $100. I have twice been called by them recently. The last time, I contacted a credit counselling agency who told me to mail them a letter and once again explain my situation and ask for a full budget disclosure form to be sent to me.
My question is can they do anything if I don't respond as money is being sent once a month (the $100).
Please don't respond and tell me I'm stupid for getting into this mess just answer my question.
The thing is I have no money to speak of. So can they have me brought back to Canada or am I safe paying the $100 every month until I can pay more
If they can bring me back to Canada what then?? Can they put me in jail and what would that do and that's stupid considering I am paying them back albeit slowly. So that would be a waste of the taxpayers money wouldn't it
The best thing that you could do is get it out of collections and back with the NSLSC. What you want to ask about is "loan rehabilitation". Not sure if you speak with the collection agency or with NSLSC but normally if you get them to agree to rebailitation and you pay your loan for 6 months with no lates/bounced payments, they will put it back into "good standing". Then, once it is in good standing you need to discover if you are eligible for "Interest Relief". You make no payments for 6 months and the government pays the interest on the loan. You can do this a total of 9 times, so you can buy 4.5 years of not paying your loan. the other thing you can do, is if it has been 5 years and you have used up your interest relief periods and your loan is in good standing, you can apply for debt reduction.
Now to your situation with the collection agency. If you are sending money every month they will not do anything. They WILL call and try to get more from you. Simply refuse and ask them not to call anymore.
They cannot deport you or force you back to Canada. They can't put you in jail.
But it would be good to get your account out of collections!
I am a registered sex offender, and because it shows up on background checks, I can not work for any business that does background checks. I am a United States citizen.
Many of you might see this as justified. I have two convictions, one for indecent exposure (2000), one for sexual assault (2001). The second was for touching a clothed woman for one second on the upper part or her left breast; think of how much worse Arnold Schwarzenegger has done. He paid someone off to keep from getting a conviction.
I have worked in temporary positions for 3 major banks after both convictions; one of them nine times. I have also worked for other major corporations, yet permanent work is elusive.
I have since lost my home and two weeks ago applied for welfare. I have never before had public assistance of any kind. I received $465 immediately in food stamps and will next week get cash and medical. The medical will come in handy since I have a Pterygium in my right eye; it costs $3,000 to treat but will most likely be 100% paid for. My eldest son will soon receive a free University of California edcation since I have little income; he starts school next month.
My house was foreclosed and the same banks which will not hire me will have to eat $60,000 in credit card debt.
The cost to the government is litterally just beginning.
I am very ambitius and am currenty involve in many charitble causes.
Because of the nature of the crimes I am not on any public database; there are no restrictions on where I can live or who I am be with; children included.
I have no issue with needing to register, but the fact that even after I had these records expunged; cleared by the courts, it still shows on background checks.
I do not need anyone to give me their self-righteous views. Just think of the things the police and miltary get aways with on a regular basis; the wealthy also.
Any suggestions on how to get by this obstacle? I have considered moving to Canada. I have visited there 3 times in the past. There are no retrictions on where I can travel.
I forgot to mention that I have been to group and individual counseling. I have learned from my mistakes, can I just move on and work again? I do not want public assistance of any kind.
if you truly got them expunged, then it would be illegal for anyone to mention the convictions on a back round check...good luck
I live in Ontario,Canada and have fallen on financial difficulties and one of my debts has sent me to collections,i get numerous calls a day and have been threatened to be taken to court i am at the point where i am ready to claim bankruptcy because i simply cannot afford the payments they demand..i want to know if anyone has dealt with a collection agency before and what they can actually do at this point as well as anyone who has been through bankruptcy to give me some advice. I have a small daughter at home an am currently 2 months pregnant and cannot deal with the stress any more. I have been to credit counselling and they said my best option is bankruptcy but i want to pay the debts back but need to get on my feet first. Any advice is greatly appreciated..thanks
A great resource for you would be to go to www.helpwithcollectioncalls.ca There is a how to guide at that website about how to deal with collection agencies in Canada. The guy is based in Ontario as well, so the info should be fairly relevant to your situation.
I also have a friend that works for a collection agency and most of the time they will tell you whatever it takes to get you to pay and half the time it's BS. In order for them to take you to court it typically has to be in collections for at least a year or so. And if you feel that they are harrassing you, then you can take legal actions against them to make them stop calling. If they are calling more than 2-3 times a week (other than if you ask them to call back) that can be considered harrassment.
One other step you may be able to talk is if you have group benefits through your employers and have what's called an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). What this is is an 800 number that people can call for all kinds of problems from work stress, to medical problems to financial problems. These people are paid on commission like debt collectors or credit counsellers or bankers, so they will give you the straight up goods on what you need to do and what your options are.
Finally, most 'credit couselling' places mainline of business is bankruptcy, so they will tell you bankruptcy is the way to go so they get paid. I would definately get a second opinion from an independent party. Also, keep in mind that those people that work for the collection agencies get paid on commission and are likely going through the same financial difficulties that most are going through right now. They get paid a commission to collect the debt, not to care about your well being so they will push and push and push until they get their money. They will demand huge payments becuase they get paid commission and the more you pay, the more they get paid in bonuses. You can pay as much as you can afford...they can't deny payment. Don't let them push you around and stress you out, becuase that won't make your situation any better. You need to do what is best for you and your children, not some douchebag making $6/hour sitting in a crummy cubical harrassing people all day.
Keep your head up! You'll make it through this!
