I owe about 16K to various credit companys. I have paid loads off using the help of the consumer credit counselling services but i was just wondering...i am planning to join my family in canada and wandering if i need to pay that off first, or while im over there , or indeed if i can get away with not paying any more at all.

What’s wrong with this strategy? Why are these deals in most cases nothing more than a scam?
First, if the debt consultant wants the first 10 monthly payments for their fee, and then wants another 10 payments for the settlement offer to the first credit card company, it will be 20 months before the first credit card company gets any money. It is unlikely that a lender will sit around and wait for 20 months to get their money. In most cases they will continue to call you, and perhaps even sue you, to get their money.
Second, debt settlements will not work on all types of debts. The government will not accept 40 cents on the dollar, paid 20 months from now, to discharge your tax debt. Credit card companies may accept a plan, but governments won’t.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The owners of the rights to “Rocky Top,” the song that’s played throughout football season in Tennessee, have settled a copyright lawsuit against the television network A&E.
The Tennessean reported that U.S. District Court Judge Aleta Trauger approved the settlement Monday and dismissed the lawsuit. The lawsuit filed in June accused the network of inserting the iconic tune in a 12-second video clip for a true crime television documentary after the owners said A&E could not do it.
Court filing did not reveal the details of the settlement and attorneys for both sides declined to discuss the settlement...
