I have something like that - Shop stop $1 debit pending.

This is probably the amount they initially used for verification. The full amount will show up on your card in the next couple of days.

Keep an eye on this though, as once we noticed a fuel station had charged this $1 fee 6 times in one day. We notified the bank and they credited the money back to us.

correct. The bank will transfer from checking to credit card at your payment authorization. They are treated as separate accounts. You can even write a check to pay the credit card, and mail it in or deliver it to any bank branch by the payment due date.

need to make an immediate payment to get back within my limits. If I make a payment straight away will I avoid an "over the limit" penalty when my bill comes on the 6th January next month? Also my credit limit is due to go up and would this over the limit situation prevent that happening?

This is where the credit world makes money! Your best bet is to make a small payment to bring the balance under your limit. In the credit world, but having your account over its limit by even the smallest amount is damaging and will show up on your credit report that you have spent over your credit limit. This can definitely hurt when seeking future credit, or limit increases. Ideally, you should try to keep the card with a small balance available, having the credit card maxed regularily can also hurt your credit, even if you do make your payments ontime!
