I see them all the time at grocery stores but i don't know how to use them? I know there are different models and each is a little bit different, but im guessing it all works about the same.
The one im wondering about is the self-swipe machine; i see people ahead of me in grocery lines use it and they only press 1 button after swiping their card...what button would this most likely be? There are so many buttons on the machine that it looks like a calculator but they only press 1.....what are all the other buttons for?
They are most likely pressing the "Credit" key. All the other buttons are in case you would like to use a debit card...then you have to put in your pin. It also could be the "Yes" key. Most of the time the machine will tell you the amount that you are about to put on your card and "ask" if it's "ok"....

Is Landline Phone requires for the Credit Card Swiper machine to operate?
There are several way to process credit cards. If you are not going to be face to face with your customers you can process a card online without buying a machine.
If you are going to be taking a card face to face with a customer there are machines that process via TELEPHONE Dial, HIGH SPEED, Cellular, & Store and Forward.
Each way has its advantages and disadvantages.
The most expensive is the CELLULAR. Not only are the machines much more expensive, but you can expect to add another $25/month for the cellular service on it.
The least Expensive is STORE & FORWARD. There are a couple of machines out there that allow you to swipe the card, print the receipt, but not send the transaction at that moment. It looks like a live transaction, but it is not. The cards are not sent until you go home for the evening, plug the machine into a phone cord, and send all the transactions out. DOWNSIDE - High risk of some of the cards being declined after you sold the product.
In the Middle as far as expense is concerned is the HIGH SPEED TERMINALS that work through a DSL or Cable line. They are a little more expensive for the equipment, but great speed on transactions and low risk.

This may seem like a stupid question, but how do you use a credit card swiper, whenever you go into a store you see people punching things on this thing. How exactly do you use it....do you hand the cachier you debit card and they swipe it?...then you punch in your pin how exactly does it work?
Okay this is what you do.
1. You swipe the card and it will ask you to press debit or credit. Now if you pick debit you will have to enter your pin and if you pick credit you don't need to enter pin. Either way there is no difference. I usually swipe it as credit so I don't need to enter pin. its very easy and simple.

We wanted a cordless/mobile phones in which the swiper machine of ICICI credit card to be attached. The customers abroad mostly pay by credit cards. Any alternative suggestion for this.
There are a couple of difeerent options for wireless credit card machines. There are some that look like a normal credit card machine with an attached printer, but they are expensive.
There are others that are a cell phone with a credit card reader on the side and a seperate printer for your belt or pocket. The printer works some what like blue tooth technology. There is no cord from phone to printer. It allows you to put the phone in your pocket. It is much smaller and ideal for service oriented companies (plumbers, construction, pest control, etc...)
They both come with an additional cost for the wireless carrier to process the transactions through their network. SO expect to pay about $25 -$35 more per month compared to a dial up lanline terminal.
There is a company that I know that has both options available:

I have a rental house on Lake Huron and I would like to be able to accept credit card payments from my renters. This will all be done over the telephone so I have no need for a card swiper. I'm basically looking for the cheapest way to accept electronic payments then refund a deposit.
I would not take the information over the phone. It opens you up to too much liability. Use PayPal or another service where you can email an invoice or a link for the buyer to pay through the service. The buyer does not have to have a PayPal account. The renter can use Visa or Mastercard, and you can refund the deposit after the rental. However, you must make sure that the partial refund is completed within a certain time period (I think 60 days) in order to do the refund.
We've used PayPal for several years in order to avoid the monthly minimum fees by some of the processors.
