I am an artist and do trade shows. I currently use a Nurit 3010 credit card swipe machine with a wireless merchant service. At my last show, another merchant told me that she thought there is now a product called a "cell phone dock" that would allow me to do credit card transactions with my cell phone. Normally these docks are for connecting your cell phone to your home or office wired phones. If this is true it would save me tremendous "$" as the merchant service is NOT cheap. Does anybody know if this would work?
bigboy: what in the world are you talking about?
chrisgalv : could you please explain why you don't think it will work? My swipe machine will dial out using my phone line at home. Also, I have heard from another merchant that they are doing this...
Also, if this wont work, if somebody invents a gadget that will do this they will make a fortune! There are thousands of mobile merchants who are on systems like mine.
You will not be able use a cell phone dock on many networks for data applications including modems, fax machines and credit card terminals. The issue is that digital cellular networks compress the traffic that is passed over them so any advanced service applications will be degraded beyond use unless they specifically recognize and support the service. The service may work on an analog network, but these are very slow (and rarer every day).
There are new services that will work on a regular cellular network that are being launched, but as you can imagine, this will require $$$, too.
Have you considered a dial-pay account? This would require you to pay a slightly higher key-entered rate for each transaction instead of the lower swipe fee, but if you are paying as much as you imply for the wireless service, this should save you quite a bit of money. It would depend greatly on your average transaction and how many transactions you process.

there was no amount put onto the imprint.i was told i couldnt take the car if i didnt sign the imprint.is this legal?can they make u sign an imprint of ur card with no amount written in?what if they decide to charge me for things that they see as a charge?i wont be able to dispute this...where do i stand on a legal point with this?
It's pretty standard procedure... what if you total the car, or just drive off into the sunset? Generally when you actually do pay they'll tear up the imprint. If it's a reputable company I wouldn't be too concerned.
A little trick I do though (handy for travelling to dodgy countries too) is I report my credit card lost or stolen... get issued a new one and then use the old one for things like this. Bit naughty I know, but it saves worrying about it.

I know when you swipe a credit card the black bar on the back of the card should be facing down (so the card is technically upside down), but which way does the bar face? Left or right?
depends on the credit card machine... most stores machines the black strip should go to the left...
I've owned one in my store for a long time, but never once used it. I was wondering if someone can give me the detailed process on how to use the machine. My terminal model is Lip Nurit 2085. If this will do any help.. http://www.instantweb.com/g/globalcheck/ product.html
What are the use of these buttons? Such as Batch and Report, etc..
It is very simple to operate credit card processing machine terminal equipment. If your merchant account services provider doesn't give you full on technical support and training you might want to look into a new provider. The operations on a lipman nurit 2085 are very basic and stated right on the keyboard of the unit. you simply navigate the menu for either a credit or debit card transaction. Then you simply swipe your credit card and the machine does the processing for you. You will be prompt to enter the amount of the credit card transaction. Once you enter the amount of the sale you will then hit the enter button and the credit card machine terminal will dial out and process the authorization. The credit card terminal machine will print out a receipt for the customer to sign and then you can hit any button on the point of sale (POS) equipment to print out the customers copy.

Everytime I swipe credit/debit card at a shop, some authentication is performed?
How does the authentication work? I also notice that the reading machine dials a number and authenticates the card.
Is this performed by a third party single entity or managed by different entities such as banks?
Thank You
this authorization is done electronically but goes through the companies which have issued you the card

Merchants, consumers deserve better treatment on credit card swipe ...
Hen it comes to credit card swipe fees, Americans are getting Third World treatment.
U.S. consumers and businesses pay markedly higher charges than those in other developed nations when it comes to purchasing with plastic, according to a report by the Merchants Payment Coalition. ...
Every time a consumer uses credit, roughly 2 percent to 3 percent of the charge goes to banks or other payment networks, which set the fees at rates that often vary from country to country. American swipe fees are double those in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and four times those in Australia, the merchants contend.
The beauty part for the credit card issuer is that it scores twice - once in a transaction fee it gets from the merchant and again with an interest charge to the customer. In 2008, those charges produced an estimated $48 billion for American banks, an average of $427 per household, the merchant coalition claims.
