Credit card computer reader for online purchases?

I was wondering if their is a card reader that can connect to a computer allowing me to just SWIPE my card and it will enter all my credit card info for me. I don't need an Auto fill program or add on. I want a SWIPE machine that will save me time in of typing in my info.
Thanks

How does a credit/debit card reader machine work?

How is that your bank account is able to be charged when your card is swiped in that machine. I don't see a physical connection between the store and a bank when you pay.

You don't see it but it is there. It's normally just through a phone jack. You can even hear the modem dialing out sometimes.

should you give your credit card to the waiter to pay or insist on taking it to the register.?

Your magnetic stripe can be copied, and duplicated on a blank card. If the waiter has a small reader. the card can be swiped and the info read transfered to major credit card blank. This should not be a practice that you card ever goes out of you sight.

I pay with cash if I have to give my card to anyone instead of doing it myself. Either run to an ATM or remember to grab cash before going.

What Personal Information does the magstripe of credit card has?

I have checked the website How Stuff Works.com but apart from the card number, name, expiration date what other personal information of a customer is stored in the mag stripe of a credit card?As per a couple of bank website it says that when a debit or credit card is swiped on a Skimmer(It's a kind of a reader) then it captures all the personal information from the card.

The magnetic stripe on a card (credit card, driver license, etc.) contains no personal information at all. All it contains is a unique number to identify that particular physical card. That number is "personal information" only to the extent that it's associated with you and your account in a database somewhere.

Let's think about this for a moment:
1. There isn't much storage space on the mag stripe, so hardly anything could be stored.
2. To access or update the info, one would have to have control of the card, and that can't be done if it's in your pocket.
3. If the card was lost or damaged, all the information would be lost, too.
All of these make storing info on the card impractical.

So, the card is used simply as a means of looking up the information on another system. In the case of a bank, this would be the bank's computers, a driver license would be the state's computers, etc. For that, all you need is the account number. If the mag stripe is damaged for some reason, the clerk can key in the number by hand.

A skimmer will capture the card's number and allow the user to create a clone card. If you feel your card has been compromised, have your institution issue another card.

I hope this helps. Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

PIN # on credit card/debit card?

If I set PIN on my credit or debit card, does it mean each time I swipe the card, I'd have to put in PIN on the number pad of the card reader so that if someone gets hold of my card, he won't be able to use it w/o knowing the PIN?

Is there any other benefits/protection for PIN?

You need to set a PIN so you can use your credit or debit card at an ATM. If you are in a store you will sometimes be asked 'debit or credit?' If you say debit, you will then be expected to enter a PIN on the pad. If you say credit (even if it is a debit card), they will require a signature and no PIN. Some low amounts don't even need a signature these days.

If you do tell them it is a credit card, when it is in fact a debit card, it has no impact on how the transaction is handled except you don't need to type a PIN. I suggest you always do it this way, because you are right, you don't want some idiot watching you type your PIN and then mug you outside the store.

  • Bibliofile Electronic Book Reader by Nadeem Haidary » Yanko Design

    Alternate E-Book

I am a voracious reader but I must confess that I prefer paper to the E-Books. However I won’t let my bias get in the way of showcasing the Bibliofile Electronic Book Reader. This one’s a nifty reader that uses page-turning gestures to generate the power necessary to update an e-paper display. The display supports something called the Active Reading margin which features apps like dictionary and word games that make reading fun without distracting much.

The interaction that was developed for the final design has a margin that can be flipped up to go to the next page or flipped down to go to the previous page. The flipper’s taper allows it to be read comfortably on a flat surface. Alternative material combination, including leather and cast cork bases was explored. Bibliofile’s stylus has two buttons (one is the nib) that send a wireless signal to the device using the voltage generated by applying strain to a piezoelectric element. The stylus thus does not require batteries or charging. The major internal elements. Of particular importance is the diode bridge, which allows current to be generated regardless of which way the generator is turned. Using a color e-paper display and capacitive touchscreen, the interface supports stylus or finger interaction. It is designed with the challenge of updating the display as little as possible to conserve energy.
