If you are going to sell a few products you can add paypal add to cart buttons next to each product on your website. The feature is available at paypal https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_wp-standard-feature-list-outside Payapl accepts debit and credit card payment and the service is free.

If you have more than 20 products or if the products will change from time to time you will need an ecommerce solution. You can preserve your current website and install a shopping cart next to it, in a folder.

What is the best way for vendors to accept credit card payments at outdoor events?

Forgive me AT&T for having so many commercials on TV about wireless networks and still not fully understanding how all this works! I need portability (access to use my equipment anywhere ie parks, beaches, etc.) I am told that there is special software that you can get for a laptop along with a card swiper that allows portability as long as there is a wireless network. However, I later found out that just because you may be able to pick up a wireless signal, does not mean that you can actually access the network. Is there a way for me to have my own portable network so that I can have wireless access anywhere-even if it is outdoors? Any mobile vendors out there that take cc's, how do you do it?
The wireless terminal sounds good, but the credit card imprint does not. I think that with so much ID theft, people will be less likely to allow a mobile vendor to have a copy of their credit card number. I am not sure what you mean by a gateway. Is this software or an account or what? Thanks so much for all of you all's info!

There are two ways of doing this:

1) Use a wireless terminal

A wireless terminal works just like a cell phone. Anywhere you can make a phone call you can process credit cards. Wireless terminals are self sufficient as they do not need a telephone line (they are wireless) or an external source of electricity as they are battery powered. This means you can bring it to your stand and process just as if you were in a typical retail store. This offers you the lowest rates and the most security as you get results immediately.

Drawbacks: They are expensive

2) Use a manual imprinter

An alternative to wireless terminals is the manual imprinter. What you would do is imprint your customers’ credit card orders at the fair/market and have them sign the imprinted credit card slip. You will give them a copy as a receipt and take theirs back to your home or office. You will then manual key enter your orders into your basic credit card terminal so you can receive payment. For large or suspicious orders you can call for a voice authorization on their cell phone to verify and freeze the funds on their credit card. You then can claim those funds from a basic terminal like the Verifone Trans 380 that you have back your home, office, or even hotel room.

Drawbacks: You don't get immediate results for your processing and may pay higher rates

Processing with a laptop won't work as you will need a wireless signal to connect to the Internet. At remote locations these are almost never available. This makes using software on a laptop a non-viable option for you at this point in time.

--------------------

EDIT:

You'd be surprised how willing people are to let you imprint their card. It is still a very common and important tool in processing credit cards and is often required in cases where you are face-to-face with the customer but can't swipe their card through a terminal which would apply to you if you didn't use a wireless terminal.

A payment gateway is basically software that runs on someone else's computer that let's you process credit card sales online. Normally they are used with websites (i.e. shopping carts) but most also support keyed sales through a virtual terminal and some even support swipers. This only works if you will have Internet access at your event.
