I filed bankruptcy over an year ago and want to reestablished my credit slowly. Should I consider a secured or unsecured credit card?
Getting a secure credit card is one way you can start to rebuilding your credit after bankruptcy. If you borrow money for short periods of time and pay it back, this will reflect positively on your credit report.

I declared bankruptcy three years ago. I'm being deluged with credit card offers. Is there a best card to go for, a best interest rate, or should I just forget the whole thing and stick it out with my Visa debit card I have through my bank?
Whatever you get, you really should pay it off every month to work toward getting your credit repaired. Also, beware, just because they say you are "pre-approved" they may not offer you a card when they run a credit check. IF you plan to keep a balance, there are many credit cards that have 0% interest for a year or so. Once again, pay it off every month to prevent future bankrupcies. Only charge when you have cash to back it up.
Good luck.

I just received my bankruptcy discharge. I want to get a card so I can build up my credit again. Please do not suggest First Premier Bank, they charge too many fees.
Thanks.
I got a Orchard Bank credit card 4 months after filing chapter 7. Starting limit is only $300, but it will help build my credit up in the long run as long as I keep balance below 50% and make all payments on time. I've heard that First Premier card for bad credit is a good one too.
Good luck to you!
I am looking for something with no application fee, reasonable annual fee, reports to the major credit bureaus and possibly converts to an unsecured card after 12-18 months of on-time payments.

I would start with a secured Visa or MasterCard from my bank or from one of the mailings you receive in your junk mail. They require you to deposit a certain amount prior into a savings account that cannot be touched. The limit of your card is based on the amount of your deposit.
A Self-Help Guide to Credit Repair after Bankruptcy | Financial ...
The best way overall is to be persistent and not to give at any point after bankruptcy while trying to repair credit woes. Do not slip back into the habit of not paying, and plan carefully financial steps for the future. This might even include work habits of not changing jobs, or going back to school to better your financial outlook for the future too. Know what common sense rules should be used in building credit, and start today in doing it.
At that point many do not think that they will ever be able to repair their credit, and might just slip back into less than perfect spending habits, and never save a penny. The fact is that the longer that a bankruptcy is in the past, the less it matters to lending institutions as far as credit goes. Banks will look at it, but they will offer the same interests rates that apply for people that have never filed bankruptcy. This is especially true if a good payment history is established during the three years. Banks will look at issues too of a stable work history since that time and how much of a down payment can be made on any loan, such as a mortgage or car loan.
