My husband has a large amount of personal credit card debt, I notified all the creditors that he is deceased. Now they are calling trying to collect from me. My credit report shows that I am an authorized user for 3 of the cards. Am I liable for any of them? I live in NY
Your husband's estate is liable for the credit card or other debt. That means that any cash he left or any property will have to be used to pay his debts before the residue of his estate (if any) is disbursed to his heirs. If your husband left any personal or real property, it may have to be sold to satisfy his debts. Unless you signed for the cards, then you, personally, are not responsible. But you also don't inherit anything until his debts are paid.

I lived with my brother who was never married/no children/no property except for car and lived at our mothers house. The car was given to my other brother. My deceased brother had over $20,000 in debt (solely in his name) and now they are starting to call and not sure what to do and told them to send request in writing. There was no will and used most of his savings for funeral expense. I and my mother were beneficiaries of life insurance and his pension. Are we liable to pay? Thanks
Generally, the debt is included in the estate, so the estate is responsible for it, so long as the debt was his and his alone. Here's a good article about it that explains it a bit better: http://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-n ews/credit-card-debt-death-1282.php
my father in law passed and has about 19,000 in unknown credit card debt.her name is on none of these cards and paying them would put her in a terrible financial situation.if it matters we live in georgia.thank you
I live in Ga. myself.Have your mother in law's attorney send a copy
of the death certificate along with a letter stating that your father in law
is deceased and that the estate does not have any funds to pay
the credit card debts. This letter needs to be sent via certifed mail
to all of the credit grantors.
The card was in his name only and he died in 2001. The amt was $5,000 and the bank (credit card) company just sent him a statement that he should include it in his income tax forms. The credit card company had told me I was not responsible for the amount as it was in his name only. Thank you for ;your help.
That sounds like you may need to file some kind of return for his estate. Check with a tax person on this.
Grandparents estate has been settled except for one credit card debt; however we have not been contacted at all from the creditor and my lawyer has found nothing out. I need help to make sure I do the right thing.
I wouldn't worry about it and let your lawyer deal with it. Especially if you're paying him to take care of this type of thing. A lot of the times (to my knowledge) the debt does not transfer to other family members.

Debtor Loads Debt On Dead Mother's Credit Card Before BankruptcyI think all bankruptcy attorneys encounter strange questions and fact situations in the lives of their bankrupt clients. Here’s one my secretary heard last week from a client who was completing our bankruptcy questionnaire. The client asked my secretary if he should include his deceased mother’s credit card. My secretary told him "no" because children are not liable for their parents’ debts. But, the client asked, what happens to all the debt he charged for his own benefit on his mother’s credit card after his mother died?
