I have a big credit card debt. I stopped making my payments in August. If I leave the USA and move to Europe will the credit card companies and collection agencies try to find me there? If they find me what will happen? Can they take away my car or other properties, garnish my wages?
They will hunt you down like a dog and take everything you own. Overseas deadbeats are subject to beatings, waterboarding and all sorts of hideous means of collection. Your best bet is to try to live up to your responsibilities by contacting those you owe and attempting to make arrangements with them. RJ
Would the American credit card companies find you and still ruin your credit rating or sue you in Europe?. I'm guessing Europe has their own system, not TransUnion, Experian, etc.? So other than the guilt you'd have for not paying back your debts, would it really matter if you basically just skipped out on the debts and moved to Europe? Don't worry, I'd never do this since I think people should be responsible for their debts, but my husband and I disagree. He thinks they could still get you somehow and ruin your new life in Europe. I think there's no way it would affect you and that it would be impossible for them to make you pay it back or to sue you. But neither one of us is 100% sure.
Christian J - sounds like my husband was right then, shoot! Seriously though, makes sense, so good information, thanks!
When I try to build credit for foreigners that have moved to the US I have to request international credit reports, comprised of any credit reports from their home country, along with personal references, and financial industry (bank) testimonials. I would imagine the same thing would happen in Europe. Either they would find you and still demand the money, or they would detroy your credit. If the IRS can go after the records of people with Swiss bank accounts, than I am sure a credit card agency can go after you.
Alas, yes. You will have the opportunity to run out on debts in two countries.
I currently owe $45,000 in student loans and I am having a hard time paying them off. The loans are private (sallie mae) and I am not elligible for consolidating them via federal loans since I am not a US citizen. I was not able to get a visa so I had to leave the US. I live in Europe now.
I understand that declaring bankruptcy would not cancel out the student loans, but I have read that bankruptcy could cancel out credit card debt. I have a good credit score (790), so given some time, with an even higher credit score, I may be able to transfer my loans to a few credit cards.
What are the laws regarding credit card debt and bankruptcy? What difference does it make that I am not a US citizen and do not live in the US?
I would strongly advise you not to go that way. You will carry that mark against you for life. Talk to your student loan creditors and tell them that you are doing it really tough. Most will understand and help you come to a better arrangement that's suitable to you both. I have been in a similar position to you and I worked out a solution with my creditors. Maybe you could talk to a financial adviser who could show you various options. Good Luck.
Whose Gold Is China Buying? | Gold News
As we wrote in a note this weekend, most analysts immediately took that to mean China would not be a buyer of the 191.3 metric tonnes of gold the International Monetary Fund announced it would sell on February 17th. And if China were out as a major buyer of gold on international markets, speculators reckon that the Gold Price is in for a fall. Yet as China bought 454.1 tonnes of gold between 2003 and 2009 – the last purchase reported – it didn't have to go shopping overseas. China can buy its own home-grown gold instead, because for the last three years in a row, it's been the world's largest producer. China produced over 300 tonnes of gold for the first time ever in 2009, according to the...
