Does America extradite for credit card debt?
IMG_0317 trash the card

Does America have an extradition treaty with any countries for people with credit card debt who have left the country or is credit card debt something you can get away with if you leave the USA without fear of anyone coming after you?

Unless fraud is proven, credit card debt is a civil matter. They will not extradite for that. At best, they would have to find you and sue you in your new country.....but then collection is next to impossible.

If you plan on coming back...well...that's a whole different matter.

Bank of America credit card debt collector question?
IMG_0312 get rid of debt

I had two credit cards with Bank of America.
Due to recession and losing my job I defaulted on both.
Balances were $2,000 for one and $13,000 for the other. They made me an offer to settle each and I am only able to settle the smaller balance one at this time.
I have until February 2010 to finish paying this card off.
Now I am getting calls from a Sunrise Family of Companies a debt collector for the card with the $13,000 balance. I spoke to them and explained that once I can pay off the smaller balance card I would talk to them about paying off this $13,000 debt. I asked them to call me in March 2010 to discuss and thought that would be it. Boy was I wrong . THEY ARE STILL CALLING. I don't understand what they think happened between our last conversation and now. What are they trying to accomplish?I have not won the lottery, nor gotten a big paying job in this time frame.
Question: What are my rights? How do I get these calls to stop until I am ready to settle this debt.
I am not hiding from my responsibility. I want to know what rights I have as a consumer, or do I have to live with this band of jerks until I can settle.By the way my pay history on both these accounts was A+ until I lost my job.
Any feed back would be great.

All I can tell you is that debt collectors will never give up

I had about the similar problem few months back but with american express. I asked the person to give me 2 months and I could pay the balance in full, and she went totally balistic, telling not asking me, but telling that I should use my other credit card (BOFA) to pay the debt. I refused to and told her politely that I'd prefer pay the balance in full in 2 months. That woman (can't even call her lady) was insane. Then I decided to hang. They kept on calling and calling, then I was forced to change my phone number.
Then about a month and a half after that, they sent me a mail asking me if I could settle for the 3rd of what I owed... Hey, I did :-)

Can Bank of America file a civil claim for credit card debt?
where did you leave yours?

I owe Bank of America some money from credit card debt, but I am currently enrolled in a debt management program, that told me not
to take any calls or make any payments. I recently received a phone call from someone saying a civil claim is going to be filed against me for this debt. How do I know if this is legit or not?

They can threaten you with lawsuits and they can even sue you for real. But they probably won't unless your balance is pretty high, like well over $10,000. It ends up costing them more in legal than it's worth and they have no way of knowing if you even have the money. So paying to get a judgement against you when you have no way of paying makes no sense.

what happens to my credit card debt in america when i come back to singapore?

what will the creditors in america do since i am already living in singapore? what will happen?

The poor US tax payers will end up eating your debt. Thanks a lot. It will however, ruin your credit for the future. So, if you ever plan on returning, don't expect to get any more credit until you have paid off you past debts. Even then it will be hard. My advice is to stay where you are.

What is the total credit card debt in America? ?

I'm not interested in what balance the average American carries. I'd like to know our collective credit card balance.

Non, commercial, non collateral based (not cars/mortgages) revolving loan (credit cards) was at $914 BILLION dollars last year.

It has gone up steadily because the majority of banks raised (tripled) interest rates on those that pay to make up for those that are just walking away from their debt.

I would bet we are over a trillion, but it is being kept from us to keep us all in the dark.

We are the stupidest, brokest, country on earth.

pay off as soon as possible. keep payments on time and keep balances, on your cards, below 50% max limit. you have good tradelines and a decent score so just keep it up and you should see some results in 6 months. as far as you jumping your score 120 points, can take a couple of years if you manage your loans and check your credit report biannually to make sure everything is correct.
